"As a senior citizen on fixed income, I entered into budget plan in Sept 09 at 65.00 per month to run through June. On Feb 20, I received notice my budget plan would increase to $208.00 per month which I cannot pay. At the end of Dec my bill was in the 400 range. When they sent notice my bill after numerous deliveries at high prices, my bill had accumulated to over 900.00. I cannot pay their demanded 208.00, so they are turning me over to collections. They are picking up my tank at a base cost of $100.00 plus 30 cents per gallon left in tank. I was not informed my budget plan would increase over triple what I had agreed to. I was not notified in Dec my accumulated bill was in 400 range, when I would have stopped deliveries. They continued to pile in deliveries. Notified me Feb 20  of more than triple increase, which I cannot pay. I am surprised and dismayed at this horrible and appalling situation I find myself unable to do anything about. HELP! The price per gallon jumped the entire winter. I could have bought fuel oil for my furnace and heated the whole house versus gas logs in one room have generated this ludicrous bill."  Ellen A., VA

$ 5.29  gallon $972.90 bill.  About to make some phone calls
OMG...I just Paid 7.10 PER GALLON to fill my tank! I also had a cracked valve and propane was leaking. who knows how long???? That is THEIR tank.
I've been considering talking to a lawyer and was thrilled to see that you are initiating a class-action suit against the company. Please count me in! The previous delivery, on 12/23/09, they charged 3.604/GAL.  After my husband called, they lowered the price to 2.60/GAL. Yesterday, I spoke with someone in the office and I threatened to take legal action. I asked him why the price quoted me over the phone yesterday was 3.919/GAL when the average rate in central New York was 2.39/GAL. I questioned whether he thought his practices were legal.  This company has been overcharging me for years now, and I am tired of feeling like they have me over a barrel.
Prepaid for 700 gallons. tried for bigger contract and was denied. Ran out of gallons and got a fill up at $3.29..way higher than prices in the area. Want to change companies but do not want to pay for tank removal.
My complaint with Suburban is not only the prices but how they charge you.  My propane is used for my stove and generator.  On an average, we only use about 70 to 100 gallons each year.  However, if we have a long power outage, this amount increases depending on the length of the outages and the number.  Suburban charges me depending on the amount of propane delivered.  I do know that fuel companies will give people who use over a certain amount of fuel each year a break on the price, but that is usually one like .05 not $2.00 or $3.00.  They amount of propane you use each year should not have a factor in the price you are charged.  When they deliver our propane, they are going past our house.  They are not making a special trip to our house.  They have also told me that they charge me the outrageous price because we have a 500# tank and they consider it a storage tank so they charge more.  We need that size tank for the generator and if we are out of power for 4 plus days, we use that much propane.  I have gone over and over this with Suburban and have even told them that I would be contacting the Attorney General's office and report them for price gouging!!!
This is a rip-off, we have another home serviced by another company which only charges $2.15 a gallon.  We have spoke with Suburban propane several times to complain.  Told them to take their tank then they will give one fill up for $1.79 then it sky rockets again.  This company is un-ethical.
PLEASE HELP, THIS IS UNFAIR. I HAVE A LIST OF 100 PEOPLE IN CENTRAL NEW YORK, I WILL FORWARD THIS TO.
This co has always overpriced the deliveries and deliver when prices are highest.
Price is yet another issue...I don't have my bill right here but the bill went up significantly (about 70.00) with no warning.  My complaint however is at best a show of their carelessness and lack of customer service and safety! I moved into a condo with existing SP Service.  I did NOT require a complete installation as there was already in place. I just needed to be turned on at the meter.  I was charged 285.00 for the installation. At a recent Board Meeting I found out that this was not supposed to have been charged.  Separately, I had a new monitor installed and it was installed by SP Technicians WITHOUT the retrofit that it required per Manufacturer Recall.  It wasn't until my family became very ill and not able to recoup (3 weeks plus) that I was told by a neighbor about the recall/retrofit required for my monitor.  When I called SP they were somewhat annoyed with the whole thing scheduling me three weeks later for service. Since it was mid-winter I was forced to use back up electric heat.  Suburban finally came and had to completely uninstall and reinstall my monitor.  They did NOT admit that they knew about the installation error although the information was provided through a Manufacturers Recall!  They are careless and change the rules as they go.  They're lucky my family members were not harmed or killed due to the poisonous Carbon Monoxide fumes coming from the improper installation of the monitor!  I tell everyone I know how poor their service is and I'm glad to add my name to the list of many who have been treated and priced unfairly by this company!
The average price of #2 heating oil in my area is about $2.75 - $3.00/gallon at this time. Suburban Propane is charging an excessive amount ($4.06/Gallon).
There is no rhyme or reason to their pricing. They tack on a tank rental fee without notification. I was told the justification for higher prices is that they are a big company with big overhead...??? Last time I got a delivery (Dec.2, $4.50 a gallon) I couldn't pay the entire amount right away and they started hounding me with phone calls.
My grandmother and myself were consistently overcharged for propane and fuel oil.  When I would call to complain the would drop the price sometimes up to a dollar a gallon and you would still be paying more than the average.  There was nothing you could do as they already delivered it.  We no longer get our fuel oil from them and I am in the process of running out the last of my propane from them and then will drop them

After calling and complaining, I got the bill dropped to $2.99/gallon.  The following week got a letter in the mail telling me my budget payment was doubling to $277.00/month.

They are bound and determined to get their money no matter what...

I received this price which was well over double anyone in my area.  I called to complain after the Jan. bill and had my price per gallon reduced to $3.99 and was assured a more competitive rate going forward.  After calling around I found rates on average of $2.75 with competitors.  I contacted Suburban asked them to cancel all deliveries going forward and I would contact them to pick up the tanks.  They ignored this request and still delivered in Feb. when I as not home.  I called and asked them to immediately come pick up the tanks and I want credit for the remaining quantity in the tanks.  They told me to have our new provider come first and put the tanks aside for them at which time they would come pick them up and credit my account.  Two weeks later I still have propane tanks in my yard with 75% propane in them.  This company is nothing but a problem and I know that the crediting process will be a huge hassle.  I have picture documentation of the amount remaining in my tank as well as written acknowledgment from them showing how much 20% remaining in my tank equals.  Still I know this will be a big mess.
They are almost 2x as high as the competition.  Never had this problem with them before.  Interesting to note it was a fill up after a bit of unusually cold weather.  Price Gouging at this point.  Going to another supplier.
The delivery driver came and filled the tank and did not even bother to knock on the door when he left the door hanger.  My first fill up of the year I was charged 2.349 and this time, approximately 3 months later they were trying to charge me 3.889.  I use about 500-700 gallons of propane a year and all other companies that I have spoken to have quoted me prices of 2.529 - 2.809 for someone with usage like me.  I am in the desirable position of owning my tank and I do not mind confronting someone when I believe that they are trying to screw me.  I called Suburban and informed them that they would not get paid for their gas unless they came and pumped it out and sold it to another customer.  They immediately lowered the price to the price that another company quoted me - 2.529.  They tried this crap with me last year as well and I am tired or having to watch out for what Suburban Propane is trying to do every time they show up.  I will be switching companies at the end of this season and Suburban will never get another shot at my business.
My bill is $1633.90 this is crazy.  My last bill three months ago was $700 this more than double in three months.   Someone need to look at this company.   When I called them about it they told me all prices went up and they have a payroll what does that have to do with me.
Each month I end up calling all the other companies to see prices of the propane so when I call Suburban I now what price I should be getting. The problem is that they charge me as much as $4.30 until I call and complain. Then after they give me their story of how much it costs for propane they lower my price to the market value they say. But it seems I have to go threw the same thing each month. I even told them that I don't appreciate getting ripped off each month.
I tried emptying the tanks last year so I could put in a woodstove.  They told me my fill up would be in June, I wanted the tanks out before that.  They filled them in March so I couldn't take them out.  I didn't ask for this fill up.  I am a hostage to Suburban Propane.
I will provide the pricing information as I get it.  I am currently stationed overseas, paying Suburban Propane for my home in Delaware.  I moved into my home in September of 2008 (then job relocated to Italy in May 09).  I immediately felt as though we were using an inordinate amount of fuel in that they were completely "refilling" the tank nearly every month to the tune of over a thousand dollars a shot; and, the only thing the house uses propane for is heating the downstairs, everything else is electric - including the upstairs heat pump. This has continued while I am overseas.  In an effort to get a handle on the situation my spouse and I made repeated requests that they only make deliveries when we asked and in the amount we requested.  They continue to show up whenever they want and just this past week "refilled" the tank to the tune of over $1,200.00 dollars before the check for January's "fill up" of a thousand dollars had even cleared the bank!  Please include me in any and all legal action you may take against this organized crime entity masquerading as a heating fuel supply company.  Oh, I am listing my military mail address here in Europe below.  The address where the home is located is in Dover DE.
I called them and asked "why so high".  They kept giving me a song and dance saying it's based on usage.  Never heard this  before.  My bill nearly doubled and I was never notified that there would be this type of price increase.  I'm writing to the Attorney General about this.  Price gouging is all it is!!!
In 2008 their prices were 11% above NY State Average.  In 2009 their price was 25% over.  In 2010 their prices are 51% over.  When I called they said the prices of propane has gone up nationally.  NY State prices went up 8.3% from 2009 to 2010.  Suburban went up 32.5%!  When I confronted them they said they had made an error and lowered it $.60 a gallon.  I have a good graph if you want it.
My previous fill price was $3.4890. The jump in price is not even close to the average of propane for our area. This company has found a good way to lose customers.
I am on a budget plan and pay Suburban Propane all year long.  I was very upset to learn that I have been paying them, especially summer months, almost 2x as much as the price of gas.  Unfortunately, I am back with them but not by choice.  I moved into my house in 1987 and had to deal with their "rip off" tactics.  When we put an addition on, they charged me so much money to move the tanks inches from the house and then re-connect.  I had to do this 1 more time and the same thing happened.  It was 125.00 to move the tanks which should be a courtesy gesture for a "long time" customer.  I have had so many arguments with them in the past 20 years.  They are so unfair and not trustworthy.  I would not have them service my furnace (heat with propane) or my stove ever.  I don't think they are trained either.  They damaged the siding on my house a some years ago (when it was newly sided).  This was not the first time they ran the hose around my house and did some damage. It is ridiculous.  I finally had to threaten them if they continued to use my driveway and damage my house so they finally park on the street to fill the tank.  Something they should have done quite a few years ago!  I could go on.  From the day I bought my house, I had to fight to get the credit from the seller of my house with the gas that was in the tanks (hundreds of dollars, again).  I switched to Agway about 10 years ago, but guess what?? Suburban Propane bought them out...so here I am stuck with them again.  They told me that they will charge me to pick up the tanks if I switch. I just had another struggle with them in the past 2 months as my charges per gallon keep climbing up.  I was told by "Donna" that I my rate was one of the lowest, yeah right, from 4.50 to 3.79....give me a break.  I want to change companies but don't want to pay them money to disconnect me.  They have over inflated my bill for over 20 years now, and I think we should seek restitution against them.  I was also told by the manager, in October 2009, that my usage was lower and that is why I should be paying 4.50 a gallon. Lets make it public and get everyone to sign against them!!! Thanks.
We had our tank filled on 12/31 and received 250 gallons at $4.22/gallon, then yesterday they arrived and we received virtually the same amount at the same price.  I called them angrily about the price gouging, and questioning the amount used in 2 months?!?!?  They immediately replaced the price with $2.99/gallon!!!  What does that say?  I believe our tank is not getting filled with as much gas as they're claiming, and I believe they are price gouging at a time when consumers are already experiencing hardship.
They also charged us a $50.00 tank rental fee.  After my husband complained, they dropped the price to 6.009 per gallon for 46.4 gallons.  A friend of ours who heats with propane paid 3.00 a gallon (also Suburban).
price is constantly going up and charging extra fees
I was outraged to get this bill.   A few days later I received a notice from Suburban that they were increasing my monthly payment from $187 to $358.  When I called them the rep stated that 4.11 was current market price.  I told her that NYS had a website stating the price in CNY was 2.76.  See had not response to this and just stated that current market rate was 4.11.  We will be switching as soon as I can find another supplier.
Asked for quote from Eastern Propane,, at various times it was at least $1.00 per gallon less,,
My father is 90 years old.  I had not contacted other companies because I had NO idea there would be this much of a discrepancy and because of the leased tank issue.  I did call around and the 3 competitors in the area range from 2.39 to 2.89 a gal.  They will do a free switch out of the tanks and one came to inspect the tank and they are able to pump out the existing propane and into a one of theirs if we need to.  We will be able to use the existing up before the lease is up in June then we are switching.  Sacramento Bee in California also has an article and people with the same stories.

COUNT US IN!!!
Had a signed contract with them for 1.89 recent fill up was 2.89 when I called they would not lower the bill and said next fill up would be 3.15 when others were 2.25....
I usually call to fill up my tank, as I don't want them coming and try to put more than 500 gallons in at one time as I can't afford it. Jan 06, 2010 I asked for 500 gallons and was charged 3.9990, which was $.50 higher per gallon then my last fill in Nov. They showed up at 7:30am on Sat. 02-20-2010 and put another 500 gallons in at 4.9990, I didn't even need a fill I could have gone the rest of winter without a fill. I called and complained told them I was getting a lawyer. They lowered the rate back to 3.9990. I've never signed any documents with them saying I agree with any price they have charged me. I think this falls in line with Robertson and Patman Act. I know this is illegal. We need to take action.
As with so many others, I now realize, Suburban changed it's price DURING my tank fill.  I got the first 135 gal. at $1.96 and the last 255 gal. at $3.69.

I have chosen to pay them for the whole fill at the $196 rate and leave the remainder in dispute.  I have prepared, but not yet filed, a complaint with the NC Attorney General.  All has been done in writing and I will wait to file with the Attorney General depending on my response from Suburban.
As a senior citizen on fixed income, I entered into budget plan in Sept 09 at 65.00 per month to run through June. I could have bought fuel oil for my furnace and heated the whole house versus gas logs in one room have generated this ludicrous bill.
